“Hello English”App: Bridges the Gap

Abstract

From being a land of different ethnicities, languages and cultures to a country that shines bright on the IT landscape of the world, India has always been a land of opportunities and paradoxes. While on one hand we Indians appreciate our diversity, on the other hand we take pride in imitating our colonial masters. Despite having more than 22 regional languages and a multitude of dialects, English language alone enjoys the privilege of being equated with education, class and sophistication. English, in India, opens door to employment avenues and as such can be regarded as a precursor of growth. Like most other things in this country, this privilege has eluded many. Only about 10.35% of the Indian population speaks English. Technology is now playing an important role in making this language universal. It is high time that English is disassociated from the tag of being a “language of the classes” and given a new identity of “language of the masses”. A step in this direction is Hello English app developed by Culture Alley. This mobile app has turned out to be the number 1 English learning and speaking app on India Google Play within eight months of launch. While there are many other English learning apps in the market, the novel feature of this app is that it is designed to cater to the needs of the Indian people residing in different states and speaking diverse languages [1–6].
