Abstract

This paper emphasizes on available open source software for various library functions and featuresof Koha, D-space and Greenstone digital library software in libraries. Due to lack of budget, libraries are suffering, and can adopt these alternatives. The developments of Open Source Software act upon the basic idea of libraries which is openness, collaborationand development. Open source does not mean only to save an institution’s large amount of money and the realcosts in the Open Source Software’s application involve licenses fee, development fee and maintenance fee. However, oneof the biggest advantages of the open source software is that all users of the product have the potential tocontribute to its development, so long as the required open source talents exist on staff.
