Digital PID Chip Design and FPGA Synthesis

The industrial applications follows the control operations based on closed loop system due to their stability and controllable desired response. The proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller is one the most adopted controller in dynamic control systems. In some industries, specific PID controllers are used for particular control. The PID control is used for early days staring form mechanical and pneumatic designs, and its implantation is based on analog circuits using transistors. There are two types of PID controllers: analog PID control and digital PID control. Analog PID controllers are much truthful as they are capable to sense constant and continuous changes. Digital PID are emerging now due to faster response of these systems when integrated with microprocessor-based system, FPGA and DSP processors. The digital systems also provide low cost solutions in the competitive world and allows parallel processing and concurrent operations. The paper focuses on the digital PID controller and its implementation in HDL environment on Xilinx ISE 14.2 and functional simulation in Modelsim 10.0 software. The digital PID is also synthesized on SPARTAN 3E FPGA. The hardware report as parameters of FPGA and timing values are extracted directly form Xilinx software.
