Mobility Management in UMTS-WLAN Interworking Networks: A Survey

Shashank Tripathi, A. K. Jain

Abstract

The growing demand for high data rates services while on the move, anywhere and anytime necessitated research efforts to integrate Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) networks and Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). Mobility management in UMTS-WLAN interworking networks is key issues of seamless handover concept. This paper presents a survey on mobility management in UMTS-WLAN heterogeneous wireless networks, along with the integration architectures, protocols and various mobility supports.

Keywords: UMTS, WLAN, handover, integration, mobility management
