Abstract
Shadow is a dark area created when light from a light source is blocked by an opaque object. The presence of shadow has been responsible for reducing the reliability of many computer vision applications including segmentation, object detection, scene analysis etc. Shadows degrade the quality of image and it may affect information provided by the image. Therefore, shadow detection and removal is an important pre-processing to restore the information of exact image. Many algorithms and methods had been developed so far. This paper is aimed at the study of different shadow detection and removal techniques and provides an overview of various methods which are easy and widely used for shadow detection and suppression.
Keywords: Shadow detection, shadow removal, chromaticity, texture, thresholding, edge
