Abstract

Abstract

Teaching and learning in schools and colleges are done over the years by writing on boards. This project involves the design and construction of an automatic chalk dust collector by using vacuum technology. Cleaning the board using a duster increases the chalk dust particles in the classroom atmosphere. When concentration level of the chalk dust suspension exceeds a safe limit, occupants of the classroom, especially the teacher are exposed to serious health hazards. Accumulation of chalk dust in the lungs causes a disease called interstitial pneumonia and multiple bullae and it also leads to irritation of eyes, skin and many more health issues. Hence automation of the dust collecting process is attempted along with a mechanism for suction, which suppresses the dispersion of chalk dust in air. The sensor detects the chalk dust particles. When the level exceeds, the motor automatically turns on and starts sucking the chalk dust particles. Such a device is expected to improve the air quality in classrooms, thus minimizing health hazards to students and especially teachers. In many cases it also helps to the students who occupy seats near the black board free from chalk dust.
